Thrombosis Australia Advisory Panel

Thrombosis and Cancer have an interesting interplay where cancer is associated with the development of thrombosis but also the development of thrombosis in a patient with cancer portends a poor outcome in both mortality and the management of the thrombotic event with anticoagulants. It is more difficult due to the increased risk of bleeding, increased risk of therapy failure, and the complications of therapies that might be required for managing the cancer.

We were fortunate to have Professor the Lord Kakkar, Professor of Surgery from the University College London, and Associate Professor Dr Vivien Chen, University of Sydney as the speakers on this webinar. Both professionals have immense experience and expertise in the field and provided fascinating perspectives to the conversation.

The session was moderated by Dr Harry Gibbs. Dr Gibbs is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Monash University, Deputy Director of General Medicine and the Medical Director of the Vascular Laboratory at the Alfred Hospital and Director of Medicine at Sandringham Hospital in Melbourne.

This conversation explored:

  • The state of knowledge surrounding coagulopathy in cancer patients
  • Thromboprophylaxis in cancer patients
  • Considerations for the management of cancer patients with a history of thrombosis
