Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a disease resulting from infection by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Thrombosis, and specifically venous thromboembolism, is increasingly being recognised as a common complication of COVID-19. Inflammatory responses caused by viral infection result in endothelial damage and coagulopathy. Further, there appears to be specific differences in the coagulation abnormality seen in COVID-19 patients in comparison with other infectious disease.

This has unique implications for physicians treating COVID-19 patients.  Determining optimal anticoagulation therapy alongside antiviral treatment is increasingly important in the prevention of thrombosis in COVID-19 patients.

We were fortunate to have Professor Huyen Tran of the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases, Monash University, and Professor James O’Donnell from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin Ireland as the speakers on this webinar. Both are eminent physicians with immense experience and expertise in treating thrombotic disease and have in-depth knowledge of the impact of COVID-19.

The session was moderated by Dr Sally Cockburn. Dr Cockburn is a practicing GP and health educator. She has also been a high-profile media presenter (Dr Feelgood) for over 30 years on radio, TV and print.

This conversation explored:

  • The state of knowledge surrounding coagulopathy in COVID-19 patients
  • Thromboprophylaxis in COVID-19 patients
  • Considerations for the management of COVID-19 patients with a history of thrombosis

A summary of the discussion can be found here.
