At 27 years of age, Andrew experienced a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in his right lung. He had a family history of hypertension and has since been diagnosed with Leiden Factor V mutation, a common genetic blood clotting disorder.

After his diagnosis, Andrew changed his lifestyle, immediately stopped smoking, and began monitoring his blood pressure and weight. Initially, he struggled with having to inject himself with medication for plane trips. He is now able to take tablets before travelling on planes, instead of self-injecting, making it easier for him to travel. After having multiple deep-vein thrombosis (blood clots) and pulmonary embolisms, Andrew fears the added risks associated with surgeries if he were to require one.

Due to the hereditary nature, Andrew’s children have tested for Leiden Factor V early, enabling them to act accordingly.
