In 2006, Giovanni was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, a rare type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. He spent several years having chemotherapy with mixed results as the cancer continued to return.

Giovanni is one of a handful of patients who have participated in multiple clinical trials offered by the Perth Blood Institute. He is extremely thankful for the excellent support and care he has received from Professor Ross Baker and the team at PBI.

“The care I have received at PBI has literally saved my life.” – Giovanni

After participating in the clinical trial for a drug aimed at treating his and similar cancers, Giovanni has been given the ‘all clear’ from any trace of the disease in his blood.

“As a result of that, it has enabled me to see my children achieve their academic and employment goals, their engagements, marriages and the birth of our grandchildren.” – Giovanni

The first thing Giovanni has done after this new lease on life is take his wife on an amazing caravan adventure of a lifetime, touring and exploring the north of Western Australia. With Giovanni's wife retiring they are looking forward to enjoying many future adventures together.

“I can’t thank everyone at Perth Blood Institute enough.” - Giovanni
