Celebrating 10 years of Perth Blood Institute (PBI)!

It is with great joy and pride that we commemorate the 10 year anniversary of Perth Blood Institute, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of patients and their families. Over the past decade, PBI has focused on providing outstanding patient care to people diagnosed with blood conditions - including blood cancers, bleeding, and clotting disorders - through an ethical and sustainable approach.

As we reflect on a decade of unwavering commitment, we invite you to read inspiring stories of those whose lives have been positively impacted by PBI. These stories serve as a testament to the profound impact our organisation has had on the community we serve.

Samantha Minniti

Samantha Minniti, a 34-year-old Perth mum, has faced an extraordinary battle against Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP), an extremely rare blood disorder. With a diagnosis in 2016, Samantha discovered the harsh reality of a condition affecting only three people per one million. TTP is characterised by excessive blood clotting in small vessels, obstructing vital oxygen supply to organs such as the brain, kidneys, and heart. Low platelet counts resulting from the clotting also give rise to bleeding issues.

PBI was understanding, supportive and knowledgeable on what i was going through even in day-to-day life.

Knowing PBI has taken great measures, introducing the Ceveron s100, shortening the time frame for ADAMTS13 test makes the ordeal less frightening.

David Sneddon

David's journey with blood clots began in 2004 when he experienced his first deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in Hong Kong. Years later, he faced a misdiagnosed DVT and a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE). Relocating to Perth, David regained his trust in medical specialists under the care of Prof. Ross Baker and became the CEO of the Perth Blood Institute to be part of the advancement of research and therapies for blood disorders.

PBI's treatments and resources, including the Thrombosis Australia website, have greatly impacted David's well-being, and he has shared his story to raise awareness.

Through the world-renowned expertise and excellent care of Ross, and the latest knowledge and research available through PBI since its establishment in 2013, this has enabled me to regain confidence in my health, as well as regaining my trust in medical specialists.

I was also able to acknowledge and express my support for the outstanding work of Ross and the PBI initiative, and the advances being made in the care of people with blood disorders.

Robert Dennis

Robert Dennis has experienced a life-changing impact through his association with PBI over the past decade. Initially diagnosed with Smoldering Myeloma, which progressed to Multiple Myeloma, PBI provided him with a clear path forward and played a crucial role in managing his condition. Participating in the IMROZ trial and benefiting from PBI's research, clinical trials, and treatments, Robert has experienced improved control over his Multiple Myeloma. With responsive support from the PBI team, including Dr. Alwan and trial coordinators, Robert has minimised side effects and effectively managed his work and personal life, showcasing the transformative power of PBI's commitment to cutting-edge research and patient care.

Giovanni Coccaro

Giovanni's life has been profoundly impacted since his chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) diagnosis in 2007, with PBI and Professor Baker managing his condition.

Regardless of the recurrences, the exceptional high level of care, problem-solving, and treatments provided PBI have allowed Giovanni to continue to enjoy his life.

With the support of PBI, Giovanni expresses gratitude for the highest standard of care, personalised support, and the opportunity to embrace cherished moments with his loved ones and a fulfilling retirement.

The level of care, individualised support and sensitivity provided by Professor Baker and staff at PBI has been of the highest standard.

Due to the ongoing treatment carried out by PBI, I have been able to enjoy retirement, travel with my wife, and be present for important milestones - children's graduations, weddings and the birth of grandchildren.
