After this trip, Peter developed extremely painful swelling in his leg. At first Peter wasn’t too concerned, however when his paramedic son saw the leg, he encouraged Peter to see his GP or go to the hospital immediately. "I wasn’t too concerned but when my son, who’s a paramedic, saw my leg he told me to go to hospital or my GP immediately" Peter Peter decided to visit his doctor who was very concerned and without further delay sent him for a scan which diagnosed a DVT. Peter still decided not to go to the hospital, and therefore his doctor prescribed a new American drug used to treat DVTs. Peter credits this drug to saving his life. Peter believes the outcome could have been very different. With the fast action of his son and doctor, Peter was able to obtain a quick diagnosis and receive immediate treatment. After learning about the risk factors associated with DVTs, Peter has made changes when he drives long distance – he takes several breaks. Peter has also got himself a dog which he walks daily. "I guess I’m one of the lucky ones being a husband, father, and grandfather, I’m alive to tell my story" Peter
