Women are being told to “just cope.” You can help change that. Donate Fundraise For far too many women, heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is dismissed as “just part of being a woman” - endured silently and accepted as normal when it should never be. But for millions of women, HMB is far more than an inconvenience. It can affect work, study, relationships, confidence, family life, and long-term health. Women living with HMB can lose between 24 and 60 days every year to debilitating symptoms. This End of Financial Year, we invite you to support the Women’s Blood Health Initiaitive (WBHI), the Perth Blood Institute’s (PBI) bold, world-first initiative to improve women’s blood health that will help the one in four women affected by heavy menstrual bleeding, anaemia, or an undiagnosed bleeding disorder. In Western Australia alone, around 175,000 women live with HMB. Yet fewer than 1% of women with an underlying bleeding disorder are formally diagnosed. Kate, a WA mother of three, experienced heavy menstrual bleeding from her teenage years through to adulthood - affecting her health, daily life, and confidence for many years. Despite repeated concerns, she often felt her symptoms were dismissed or not fully understood. Today, she watches her daughter, Kiahli, navigate many of the same challenges. “Too often, women are made to feel this is something they simply have to live with,” she says. At the heart of the WBHI will be the world-first launch of My Flow Check - an evidence-based digital screening tool designed to help women recognise when heavy bleeding may signal something more serious. The tool provides women with a clear, GP-ready summary they can take to their healthcare provider, helping bridge the gap between symptoms, diagnosis, and care. Your support will help launch a major public awareness campaign about women’s blood health across Western Australia, roll out My Flow Check and create the opportunity for research into factors impacting women’s blood health This initiative has the potential to transform women’s healthcare - improving diagnosis, closing critical gaps in medical knowledge, and ensuring women receive the care they deserve. PBI has already invested significantly in the research and development of My Flow Check. While grant applications are underway, additional philanthropic support is required to bring this initiative to life. We cannot do this without you. Every donation, no matter the size, will help improve diagnosis, treatment, and health outcomes for women and girls. Thank you for supporting a future where women’s health concerns are heard, understood, and treated seriously. Kind regards, Professor Ross Baker Chair, Perth Blood Institute
